I have been a full blown lover of the big C since day dot so I like to get into the celebratory spirit right from the start of December. We have a number of advent calendars going at once (rolls eyes at self) 'cos why not? I mean, hasn't the advent calendar concept been reinvented again and again with so many options to choose from depending on finances and levels of effort? I love that.
Chocolate advents for my three Vicklets every single morning just does not work. It is a no go unless I want freaky, greedy behaviour from 6.30am every day for a month. Just no.
Three or four years ago I discovered the Christmas book advent idea and gosh, I love a good story book and by golly, I love Christmas so it felt like the perfect marriage.
The idea is that you wrap up Christmas stories and every day in December the kidlets unwrap one and read it. We tend to do it every night before bed, all sitting around as a family. It's warm and fuzzy material (when everyone is sitting still, not yelling or fighting over who is turning the page).
I started off just doing books for the 12 days before xmas, because that's all that I could find and afford but have since worked up to 24 to cover the entire month of December leading into Christmas.
You don't have to spend your entire Christmas savings on books to do it! Initially I was borrowing books from the library and I found quite a few at the op shop which often only cost me $1 or $2. Another year I bought a few from Aldi but mostly have stuck to buying just one new (full priced) one a year to be mindful of finances. This is our new book for this year:
So, what do you need:
Brown paper (or whatever you choose to wrap them in)
Marker (for writing numbers on the front to count down).
Here are some of our favourite Christmas stories:
We love a mix of traditional and new.
To top it off we place them in a basket under our tree. I can't get enough of this image! So much Christmassy joy!
